A box spring may be harder to remove than the mattress above it because it is rigid. Before pickup, identify the size, measure the exit route, and tell the hauler whether the foundation bends or separates.

Foundation types change the plan

Traditional box springs usually contain a wood frame, fabric, and metal components. Other foundations may be solid platforms, split queen or split king pieces, adjustable bases, or slatted frames. Send a photo or describe the item accurately in the estimate email.

Five details to collect

  • Width, length, and thickness of each foundation piece.
  • Whether it is one rigid unit or a split set.
  • The narrowest doorway, stair turn, or landing.
  • Whether a headboard, frame, or adjustable base is also leaving.
  • Any stains, pests, broken wood, exposed staples, or sharp wire.

Do not cut it open by default

Cutting fabric or breaking the frame can expose staples, splintered wood, and metal wire. It can also make material harder to contain. Leave dismantling decisions to the provider after the item and path have been assessed.

Keep the path clear

Remove bedding and small objects from the room. Open doors and secure pets. You do not need to carry the box spring outside before an in-home pickup unless the provider specifically agrees to curbside service.
